Volcanic Sainte-Anastasia Island, located 1.5 km off the coast of Chernomorets, is one of the seven lake islands of Bulgaria: three can be visited all year round by boat, private boat rental is required to access the remaining islands.
Sainte-Anastasia Island houses a 15-16th century church which contains reliefs from 10 to 11th and from 12 to 14th centuries. The one-hectare island also has a large monastic building housing a six-room interactive museum exhibit showing different stages of St. Anastasia Island’s past, from pirate treasure to prison cells and more. The island has a restaurant and tea is served in a small café, “Lekarna”, prepared with herbs typical of the region.
According to Pavlin Dimitrov, director of the island and member of the Burgas municipal tourism enterprise, the island receives 35,000 visitors during the summer season – sometimes 6,000 people per day. He explained that the island, which enjoys good weather until the end of January, hosts concerts and that it is possible to observe unique birds in spring and autumn.
The family trip continued by boat with a navigation to Chengene Skele, a small village 15 km south of Burgas. and formerly a fishing village, which still retains some fishing traditions. Those who took part in the trip saw a knitted fishing net, examples of fishing nets, ropes and knots, and heard stories from an island fisherman about underwater life.
A celebration of culture on the island saw the group observe glassblowing at the Chengene Skele Amphitheater, before visiting its glassblowing showroom.
