NEW YORK – The UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 27/06 on Thursday, confirming that the EU military deployment, the EUFOR Althea mission, will remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina. N1 reported.
According to the Swiss representative to the UN Security Council, Pascale Baeriswyl, EUFOR contributes significantly to peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in the region.
She said that the security and prosperity of Bosnia and Herzegovina rests on unity and respect for the Dayton peace agreement, expressing support for the work of the High Representative until the conditions for closing his office are fulfilled. Baeriswyl expressed hope that Bosnian leaders will make every effort to achieve constructive dialogue on the EU path, while protecting human rights and fighting corruption.
THE mandate of The European Union Force (EUFOR) Operation ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina was launched in 2004 with the main objective of ensuring a safe and secure environment in BiH. In February, just after the start of the war in Ukraine, EUFOR deployed an additional 500 troops, bringing the total number of EUFOR forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina to 1,100, followed by deployment of a German military contingent of about 50 people in mid-August last year.
Željko Komšić, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressed satisfaction with the extension of the mission’s mandate.
He said that after achieving peace as the goal of the Dayton Accord, the goal now is the transition to a modern democratic state, adding that this is not complete.
“Bosnia and Herzegovina has remained caught in the whirlwind of ethnicity-based policies and various projected ethnic goals. The Dayton Agreement has become a tool in various geopolitical struggles and Bosnia and Herzegovina is not allowed to become a modern democratic state. Ethnic politics and ethnic groups are used to create tension and destabilization, in order to more easily achieve short- and long-term geopolitical goals. I consider such geopolitical behavior towards Bosnia and Herzegovina to be absolutely unacceptable,” Komšić said.
High Representative Christian Schmidt, who oversees the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented his biannual report on Thursday warning of unprecedented attacks on the peace agreement and the constitutional order and legal system of the country.
Schmidt, whose report was presented at the session, was not present at UN headquarters.
In the report, he stressed the importance of opposing the efforts of the government of Republika Srpska to weaken fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and the constitutional foundations of the country and its institutions.
The US representative to the UN reiterated the full support of the United States and the entire international community for the High Representative and his work. He also expressed his strong support for the country’s full integration into the transatlantic community and the EU.
On the other hand, the representative of the Russian Federation accused Western actors of undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement. He said EU and NATO integration was an “obsessive” desire of Western countries, saying it was not what the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina wanted.
