The leading role of Greece in the design and development of tourist routes with the aim of boosting exchanges of tourist flows between Balkan countrieswas at the top of the agenda of the 2nd International Congress on World Civilizations and Historical Itinerarieswhich was held in Sofia last week.

Addressing delegates, Greek Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development George Tziallas mentioned the joint initiatives of the Ministry of Tourism and the World Tourism Organization in this direction, in particular the organization of the 8th UNWTO International Meeting on Silk Road Tourism organized for the first time in Europe, in Thessaloniki, last month.
Tziallas then highlighted the importance of harnessing new technologies to develop these routes, through which the ministry aims to increase traffic and enrich the overall travel experience.

On the sidelines of the event, Tziallas met with Bulgarian Minister of Tourism Nikolina Angelkova to discuss progress under the Silk Road initiative and lay the foundation for the creation of the Balkan Tourist Route .
At the same time, the Minister of Tourism Elena Kountoura reiterated Greece’s commitment to fostering strong ties in tourism through synergies between Balkan countries.
Addressing the international forum titled “Carrefour: alternative tourist routes” during the 34th Philoxenia Hospitality Fair Held in Thessaloniki earlier this month, Kountoura highlighted Greece’s role in planning and promoting bilateral, regional and international initiatives for the development of tourism in the wider region, including Route Tourism of Silk, transnational partnerships in the development of thematic tourism through co-financing Interreg programs and towards the creation of common tourist routes with neighboring countries to attract visitors from distant markets.
