Balkan Mountain Music Festival takes place in Shandaken – Daily Freeman

SHANDAKEN, NY — Four bands will come together for a celebration at the Balkan Mountains Music Festival in Glenbrook Park with a free concert on Saturday, September 23, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Bands from the Hudson Valley and New York City will play strange meters and unusual scales and harmonies at the park, located at 48 State Route 42, according to a release.

Visitors will be able to experience a different culture, hear music on instruments rarely seen in the Hudson Valley and learn traditional dances, the announcement said.

The event opens with dance classes at 3 p.m. Next, Eva Salina’s Community Choir takes the stage at 4 p.m., followed by Pontic Firebird at 4:30 p.m., the Mac & Cheez Balkan Power Trio at 5:30 p.m., and Bourbon and Breastmilk’s polyphonic Georgia acapella. songs and beyond at 6:30 p.m.

Balkan means “forested mountain range” in modern Turkish and has been the Turkish word for the Balkan Peninsula since Ottoman times, organizers said.

Countries located in or near the Balkans include Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Turkey.
