During a joint conference with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg, broadcast via the YouTube channel of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gabriel underlines Bulgariasupport from Austria Schengen vision of adaptation.
Gabriel highlighted the multifaceted aspect of Schengen discussion, interweaving of trade, tourism and bilateral relations between Sofia and Vienna. While Austria praised Bulgariaprogress towards SchengenSchallenberg pointed out the challenges impacting the Schengen area. He stressed the need to strengthen border control efforts while clarifying that Austria’s position is not aimed at Bulgaria or Romania, but aimed at strengthening overall border security.
Address concerns regarding Schengenfunctionality, Schallenberg emphasized the need for a more secure system Schengen which meets citizens’ expectations in terms of security. Ministers also discussed Ukraine and EU enlargement, emphasizing solidarity within the European family and the importance of stable neighboring regions that align with European values.
Underlining Austria’s position on EU enlargement, Schallenberg affirmed Austria’s openness to Western Balkan countries joining the EU without imposing new membership conditions. This is the second high-level visit to Austria in a month after Prime Minister Nikoai Denkov met with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on October 24.
