Bulgaria has the potential to deploy 200 MW of rooftop solar capacity across the country over the next few years, the director general of the Sustainable Energy Development Agency (SEDA) said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a conference organized by the German-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK) in Sofia, Ivaylo Alexiev said the technical potential of rooftop solar installations in the Balkan country is estimated at around 2 million square meters.
The deployment of such systems should be concentrated in urban areas and, although 200 MW is not a large figure, at the local level it could have a significant impact on households, Alexiev added.
Last month, Bulgaria made changes to its renewable energy legislation, incorporating terms such as “prosumer” and “civic energy communities” to support the expansion of green energy and encourage private households to adopt it.
During his presentation, Alexiev highlighted the need to harmonize many existing regulations in various sectors to ensure the effective implementation of the amendments.
