On the occasion of the International Day of PeaceTHE President of Congress local and regional authorities, Leendert Verbeekissued the following statement:

“For more than seventy years, since the Second World War, our continent has worked to build a democratic Europe, respectful of human rights and the rule of law, of a unified Europe, of increased cooperation and, above all, a Europe of peace.

This construction has held up, despite regional conflicts and the war in the Balkans, but today it is seriously shaken by the war launched by Russia against Ukraine. The world has become more dangerous since this nuclear power trampled underfoot all the principles of international and multilateral cooperation to choose war.

Respect for the rule of law and compliance with obligations under international law by democratic states constitute the foundation of peace. The community of democratic nations must do everything in its power to ensure that in this conflict, international law is respected, the aggressor is held accountable and justice is served for the victims.
