North Macedonian utility ESM appoints Viktor Andonov as head of investments and development

Energy expert Viktor Andonov has joined the board of directors of Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM) as director of development and investments. As energy advisor to the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, he oversaw the tender for the selection of the strategic partner for the construction and operation of the Čebren pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant.

“I had the honor of being the energy advisor to two prime ministers as well as two deputy prime ministers and to personally contribute to the process of reform of the energy sector, and in particular in the energy transition segment. I am honored to be part of the ESM team, which has great challenges ahead in accelerating projects and investments in renewable energy sources. The ESM should be the key to a just transition in North Macedonia,” Andonov said.

Upcoming floating photovoltaic projects

During his appointment, he revealed that the company would develop floating solar power projects on water reservoirs. Viktor Andonov received a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 2011 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies in Skopje, from which he also obtained a degree in electrical engineering.

The head of development and investments of ESM started his career at the energy department of the Ministry of Economy in 2006. Ten years later, he joined EVN Macedonia, a private electricity distribution company and supplier of electricity.

Viktor Andonov moves to MES after five years as head of government

In 2018, Andonov became the special energy advisor to the then Deputy Prime Minister. Kocho Angjushev, in charge of economic issues. Subsequently, from 2020, it informed Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, and remained last year as energy advisor to his successor, the Prime Minister Dimitar Kovačevski.

Andonov participated in the energy sector reform process that began in 2018. At the time, the Energy Community Secretariat declared North Macedonia a champion of energy reform. Andonov took the lead in developing and adopting the first development strategy based on the European Green Deal, as well as the first transparent process in the Western Balkans for granting preferential tariffs to photovoltaic plants.

Viktor Andonov regularly participates in expert debates in the country and the region. Over the past year, he has been a member of the energy crisis committee and its spokesperson. He oversaw the recently completed selection of the strategic partner for the construction and operation of the Čebren pumped-storage hydroelectric power station.
