Olomouc, October 30 (CTK) – President Petr Pavel started a two-day visit to the Olomouc region this morning, participating in a debate with students of the Faculty of Arts of Palacky University.

Faculty dean Jan Stejskal said the auditorium with around 200 seats was fully occupied within minutes of registration launching.

The auditorium was also full on October 17 last year, when teachers joined the all-day strike.

After his visit to Olomouc, Pavel will visit the north of the region today, before returning to Olomouc on Tuesday afternoon to visit the Land Forces Command Headquarters.

The students discussed political topics related to the Western Balkans, China and university funding.

“I am convinced that it is time to open a broad debate on this subject,” the president said of university funding. “We cannot start working on such complex issues that meet resistance from the system by trying to change the thinking of members of that system, but we must work on it from the outside. Prepare experts who are not part of ministries and state institutions, prepare the mechanism as it should ideally work. At the same time, we must convince the critical part of public opinion that this is the path we want to follow and thus put pressure on the State and on politicians, who will ultimately have no other choice but to follow this way.”

The students also asked about Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochova’s proposal to leave the UN over the organization’s recent resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between the radical Palestinian movement Hamas. and Israel.

According to the president, there is nothing wrong with having critical opinions that move society forward. “Even though we may today perceive the UN as cumbersome and in some cases paralyzed, particularly with regard to foreign policy and security issues with regard to the veto power of the permanent members of the Security Council, the solution is not to withdraw from it. The solution is to look for ways to make the organization more efficient,” said Pavel.

Slovak students asked Pavel for his opinion on Slovakia’s direction after September’s parliamentary elections. Pavel admitted that he was in a difficult situation and did not want to criticize the internal affairs of a sovereign country. However, he expressed the hope that these fiery speeches were only part of the electoral campaign and that cooperation between the two countries would be open and united.

“If we break up, it will definitely hurt both of us,” he said. “In such a complex environment, any differences between us will immediately be used against us. »

According to the dean, this is the third such visit to the faculty. The first was Empress Maria Theresa in the 18th century and the second was President Vaclav Havel (in office from 1989 to 2003), who received an honorary doctorate from the faculty.

Stejskal told CTK that the faculty launched a reservation system due to the limited capacity of the auditorium and the seats were fully booked within minutes.

He said the teachers were happy to be included in the program. “We see this not only as a sign of respect for Palacky University, but above all for the human and social sciences that we cultivate at the faculty,” he added.

President Pavel is also scheduled to visit the regional office in Olomouc today, before heading to the north of the region. After a meeting with the patriots of the Jeseniky mountain region, he will conclude today’s program in the evening with a debate with the residents of Javornik in Jeseniky.

On Tuesday, Pavel will visit a company in Jesenik that produces and sells flannel shirts, have lunch with the mayors of Jesenik and Sumperk, and then visit a manual paper factory in Velke Losiny, near Sumperk.
