Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, achieves official recognition as a sustainable travel destination

Successfully meeting EarthCheck’s rigorous criteria required adopting a resilient approach to managing energy and water consumption.

This step is particularly important because it anticipates the next United Nations climate change conference, COP28, which is due to be held in the United Arab Emirates at the end of November. This year’s conference will primarily focus on the global goal of reducing emissions by 43 percent by 2030.

Raki Phillips, Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, highlighted the importance of Silver certification in Ras Al Khaimah’s efforts to become a leader in sustainable tourism in the UAE and the region in the sense wide by 2025. He expressed his gratitude to the local tourism community for their unwavering dedication to achieving EarthCheck Silver certification. This recognition not only validates Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to sustainable tourism, but also aligns with the ambitious goal of welcoming more than three million visitors by 2030.

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority has unveiled its own sustainability certification initiative for tourism businesses, known as Responsible RAK. This program is based on scientific data from EarthCheck and currently has the participation of more than 20 tourism establishments that actively monitor their environmental impact and take concrete steps towards sustainability.

Many tourism entities in Ras Al Khaimah, including attractions, hotels and tour operators, have already achieved Responsible RAK Silver certification. These include well-known names such as Al Hamra Beach, Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Jais Flight (home to the world’s longest zip line), SAFARAK Travel and Tour Company, Jais Sledder, among others.

Additionally, the emirate has established strategic partnerships with leading operators and developers who prioritize sustainability. A good example is Wynn Al Marjan Island, renowned for its unwavering commitment to sustainable best practices, including LEED Platinum and Four Green Globes certifications for its infrastructure.
