Road detours announced as protests by miners and energy workers continue – The Sofia Globe

Detours were announced as energy workers and miners continued, for the third day, to block roads in parts of Bulgaria to protest against the government’s proposed project to the European Commission of shut down the country’s coal industry.

Protesters blocked the Trakia highway at the intersection connecting Stara Zagora, the sub-Balkan highway connecting Sofia to Burgas in the Gurkovo region and the Radnevo – Nova Zagora road.

For those traveling on the Trakia highway, the detour is from the Nova Zagora crossroads on the Nova Zagora – Sliven road to the Svoboda road crossroads.

For those traveling from Veliko Turnovo via the Republic Pass (also known as the Hanboaz Pass), the detour is through the village of Dimovtsi towards Nikolaevo, and check-in is at the Gurkovo crossroads on the sub-Balkan route from Gurkovo. in Veliko Turnovo.

If you travel from Gurkovo via the Republic Passage, you need to pass through the village of Konarevo and join the Tvarditsa – Elena road to Veliko Turnovo.

Bulgarian National Radio reported on the afternoon of October 1 that the Kyustendil – Dupnitsa road had been blocked by protesting miners.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Energy Minister Rumen Radev (not to be confused with the president of the same name) and an extraordinary Cabinet meeting to step down. the plan for the closure of the country’s coal industry.

It appears that Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov’s invitation to trade union confederations for negotiations on Sunday afternoon will be refused.
