Tanya L. Domi is an adjunct assistant professor of international and public affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and an affiliate faculty member of the Harriman Institute.
Prior to his appointment as a professor at Columbia in 2008, Domi worked internationally for over a decade on issues related to the development of democratic transition, including political and media development, human rights, gender and sexual identity issues and human trafficking. She expanded her research to include the European integration of the Western Balkan countries and NATO’s enlargement to the region. These topics drive his research and teaching interests in the Balkans and the states of the former Soviet Union.
She teaches “Human Rights in the Western Balkans” and “The Great Powers and the Balkans after the Fall of Yugoslavia”.
During her previous political work in Bosnia and Herzegovina implementing the Dayton Peace Accords for the OSCE Mission 1996-2000, she served as Advisor to US Ambassador Robert Barry and Chair of the OSCE Commission of Media Experts. She later served as spokesperson for the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has also worked on democratic transition projects in Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Haiti, Kosovo, Montenegro, Nepal, Serbia, Gambia, Philippines and South Sudan. Domi is a former Congressional defense policy analyst and also served in the U.S. Army as an officer and noncommissioned officer for 15 years.
Domi is a widely published writer and commentator. It was published or appeared in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Al Jazeera America, The Washington Post, The BBC, The Institute for War and Current Affairs Reporting, Transitions on Line, Balkan Insight, open democracy, Oslobodjenje And The Novelistand has appeared on Al Jazzera America, National Public Radio, C-SPAN, CNN International and PBS Newshour.
Ms. Domi earned a Master of Arts in Human Rights from Columbia University in 2007. Her undergraduate degree was awarded from Central Michigan University in 1981 with a double major in political science and journalism.
