The new Balkans? Serbia and Kosovo take a small step towards détente

Good news from the Balkans. And no, this is not the start of a macabre joke. I am referring to a agreement concluded this week between the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo, under the supervision of the European Union.

An agreement to do what? For starters, well, agreeing on things… the small and the insignificant at first, such as the legitimacy of each person’s license plates and customs stamps. But the plan is to keep adding to this list, until – fingers crossed – the process itself leads to trust and peace, at a time when not only the region but the world sorely needs more of both.
