This week’s summit between the EU and Western Balkan states will focus on mutual strategic interests and investments.

A summit between the European Union and the leaders of the Western Balkans will take place on Wednesday October 6 in Brdo pri Kranju. Leaders of the EU and the six Western Balkan partners will attend the summit. These are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia and Kosovo.

The summit will discuss “mutual strategic interests” as well as current EU investment initiatives in the region. The European Union has planned thirty billion euros to invest in the Balkans over the next seven years. Nine billion will be in the form of grants and 20 billion in the form of guaranteed loans. The aim is to boost growth in the Western Balkans, which the European Council says will also benefit the EU as a whole.

The summit is part of the strategic agenda of the European Council 2019-2024 and is a priority of the Slovenian EU Presidency. EU leaders will issue a joint statement at the end of the summit and invite heads of government of relevant Western Balkan countries to join them.
