SARAJEVO – The European Union wants Bosnia and Herzegovina to succeed on its path to EU membership, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after a meeting with the president of the country’s Council of Ministers , Borjana Kristo.

“The future of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in the European Union, as a single, united and sovereign state… We are here to help you get closer to the EU,” Von der Leyen said. According to her, the objective must now be to make clear progress on the 14 key priorities.

She added that Bosnia must act with one voice and not allow further setbacks. Von der Leyen stressed the need to bring the economies of the EU and the Western Balkans closer together.

“That’s what we’ve been working on. We have an investment plan of 30 billion euros for the Western Balkans, and this plan is quickly bearing fruit. A good example is the road and rail projects along the Vc corridor, which constitute the link with Central Europe. Your economy is at 35% of the European average, which means significant untapped potential for us, and this is precisely why we are presenting the new development plan for the Western Balkans,” said von der Leyen. N1 reported.

During the visit, von der Leyen did not mention opening accession negotiations by the end of this year. However, Borjana Krišto stressed that she hopes that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be encouraged by the opening of accession negotiations.

Krišto said that this visit was very important for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path towards the EU, adding that this arrival was an opportunity to present the EU growth plan for the Western Balkans.

She added that they discussed what the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina has done over the past ten months regarding Bosnia’s path to the EU.

Krišto said that in the coming period the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina would work intensively on implementing the necessary reforms.

A group of human rights activists welcomed the EC president in front of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency building in Sarajevo with banners reading “EU and Von der Leyen complicit in the genocide in Gaza”.
